Reports from the first two DFL cyclocross dress race series are up on howtoavoidthebummerlife.
the second of the cross dress series happened in what could be better described as a junkie, garbage park. Lots of long climbs, coupled with an equal number of rocky descents and a smattering of powdery, duffy, off camber corners. Ill go out on a stable limb and say that there were at least 100 serious as a heart attack ATHLETES in attendance
There are also photos and old videos of DFL races available, and a segment in Pure Sweet Hell is devoted to the series. Check ‘em out.
It should be mentioned that the urban outlaw series shares no affiliation with new DFL-cyclingnews.com team. That DFL is apparently a England-based transportation services firm. The irony.
Vive le ‘cross!
A quick link to photos from the 2006 UCI Michigan race weekend.
More photos of Sunday’s race from Douglas Gatto, some great suffering shots.
Here is a news clip about the Nys incident in Aalter. The clip is in Dutch, so I can’t really tell what they are saying, but it contains some great footage of the race.
Jonathan Baker jumped into the 2006 cyclocross season with back to back victories at the Tailwind Enterprises – Kinetic systems UCI weekend in Michigan. Racing for Primus Mootry bicycles out of Colorado, Jon is looking good to improve upon a stellar 2005 cross season. Since he took the first domestic UCI win this season we decided to ask him to be our first Pro Cyclocross Questionnaire:
We’re happy to announce a new addition to this site called the Cyclocross Pro Questionnaire! CPQ for short, the format is inspired by Large Fella’s fantastic Framebuilder Questionnaire, in which top framebuilders answered the same set of questions. The result was highly entertaining and informative, and provided some real insight into the people behind the beautiful bikes.
We hope to do the same for cyclocross, and over the coming months will be posting answers from America’s top crossers.
Let’s get started with CPQ #1: Jonathan Baker of team Primus Mootry.
World champ Erwin Vervecken has a sweet flash intro on his website. I love this stuff.
Is that Linkin Park I hear?
Doesn’t quite shake the booty like the Lion King’s splash screen, but it is still pretty damn awesome.
The domestic cyclocross season has officially started. The Tailwind Enterprises UCI weekend is the first UCI ranked cross race held in the USA. There is another UCI C2 race in Michigan tomorrow as well as the UCI C2 race in Vermont.
You will read the full results in the next few days on the news websites but here is a quick spoiler for the home town crew.
Bridgette Stoick (River City Bicycles) took 2nd behind Canadian national triathalon champ Tara Ross. (Tara has also gone to CX worlds for Canada back in 2005)
Bridgette attacked from the gun, getting the hole shot and forcing Tara to bridge up solo. They were together for most of the race, Tara getting a little gap near the end and holding it for the win. Bridgette was pretty far ahead of the 3rd placed rider.
Jonathan Baker (Primus Mootry) won the Elite race in front of Andy Jaque-Maynes, Tristan Schoutan, Brandon Dwight, Nathan Chown, and a few other small time pros. The lead group of 8 rode away from the rest with Jonathan winning on a solo move late in the race.
Ian Brown (River City bicycles) took 12th place. Molly Cameron (Vanilla bicycles) finished 8th.
The course began wet in the morning. It was crazy humid but the 70 degree temps made the course dry out quite a bit by the elite race. They are predicting thunderstorms tomorrow.
Lets hope for it!
Six weeks ago I started seeing some cyclocross themed ads for River City Bicycles in the local alterna-paper. They’ve been counting down each week until the first cross crusade race, which takes place next weekend. Local crosser and designer of the ads, Andrew Reed, was kind enough to send me digital copies of the last four weeks. Check ‘em out:

Local crosser Erik Tonkin has written a nice article about cyclocross over at bikeportland.org.
There’s a simple reason why ‘cross is popular. (Well, there are lots of reasons, but that’s a topic for another day….) The sport is so new to so many people that improvement comes fast and furious, and that’s very encouraging to an athlete. That girl that always beats you by ten minutes in the MTB XC race might be in for a surprise on the ‘cross course if you’ve honed your dismounts. Or that guy that always out-sprints you on the road might not have a chance because you drop him on the run-ups. And that rider that always—no matter what—always tries to ride the same line, well…you studied the course before the race, found a better line, and on the last lap you took it and the rest was history.
Erik is co-owner of Sellwood Cycle Repair, and races for the Kona cyclocross team. Read the article.
A quick note about bikeportland.org: Jonathan Maus has created a site with a wealth of information, news, and insight. What started out as a grassroots bike blog has become an internet hub for bike culture, media, and activism. It has largely inspired race.cx… thanks Jonathan!
