Nationals predictions

Masters cyclocross nationals start today, with elite men’s nationals Saturday, and the Women’s on Sunday. Given the forcast below, here are my weekend predictions:

Elite Men

  1. Ryan Trebon
  2. Jeremy Powers
  3. Jonathan Page
  4. Tim Johnson
  5. Barry Wicks

Page in 3rd? This will be his first race back since the dislocated shoulder, and while I suspect that he’ll put on a great show, it won’t be enough to stop Trebon on a dry New England course. Wicks will lead the early charge with Trebon, and then he’ll finish in 5th. Johnson will be fast, but has shown that he is an “epic conditions” guy, and this weekend is not going to be epic. Powers is on fire and will be 35 seconds down on Trebon.

Wells, Baker, Ben Jaques-Maynes, Tonkin, and Horner will round out the top ten.

Elite Women

  1. Katie Compton
  2. Christine Vardaros
  3. Georgia Gould
  4. Rhonda Mazza
  5. Katerina Nash

Katie Compton will crush everyone, with Vardaros putting the Belgian hurt on the rest. Gould, Mazza, and Nash will battle for third place!

Dan Werle wrote me about some dark horses:

“Matt White & Deidre Winfield. Neither will win, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed at least one of them will go top-5. It’s really fun to see them race. They don’t even breathe heavily. Amazing.”

Katerina Nash isn’t an American citizen, so she can’t race nationals. I think Winfield can make the top 5 women, she’s looked strong today winning 30-34 women and last weekend in RI>

Winfield is my wonderful sister and a fabulous mom. She is also a magnificent wife. She is going to Worlds in Belgium and we are all VERY EXCITED about the Worlds. How wonderful she performed in RI and all year. She has an 18 month old and she still Rocks – she has not even broken in with stride yet. Wait another year and see what she does.

Although I am her brother and I may be biased, but she is wonderful and we are looking for a GREAT finish and placing in Worlds. Go SIS!!!
