Julien Absalon (born August 16, 1980 in Remiremont) is a French mountain biker. In both 2004 and 2008 he won a gold medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics and at the 2008 Summer Olympics. He rides for the Spanish mountain bike team Orbea. Absalon has 17 World Cup wins.

Absalon won four consecutive Mountain Bike World Championships (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007).

Two messengers embark on a romantic weekend of mountain biking in the mountains of Canada, only to find themselves on the run from a homicidal downhiller. It sounds like the perfect horror movie, but turns out to be the most painfully boring cycling-thriller ever made. Watch it and you’ll be begging for the downhiller to chop the messengers to bits so you can go for a ride, clean out your garage, or do your taxes.

The best parts, however, are all in the trailer below. Watch closely, and enjoy.

I had a chance to meet Brian and catch a screening at this past weekend’s Bicycle Film Festival here in Portland.

Every luscious shot in this film exudes love of the bicycle. It follows the workers of Santa Cruz Bicycles, from the factory to the trails, streets and track.

It’s true, the film exudes love of the bicycle. It makes you realize how much you love bicycles, and makes you want get out and ride through the hazy way it captures your daydreams of rides past. It wakes up those slow, shoe gazing memories of you and your friends having a blast out in the woods.

What I loved most about the film, though, is the way it delivers the passions of the Santa Cruz employees off the bike. The film shows that it isn’t always about getting rad on the bike. That it’s about the people, and how the bicycle can be a beautiful tool for bringing all kinds of people together to share their external passions. Bicycle riding has long been a way to surround myself with like minded people that help inspire the other parts of my life. We Just Work Here reminded me that it’s not the gear, or the trails, or the racing, but the people that make cycling great.

Brian Vernor is co-creator of the modern cyclocross classic Pure Sweet Hell. He is also an employee of Santa Cruz Bicycles, which now offers a cyclocross bike.
