The power goes out.

It snows.

We battle.

We win.
We hula hoop some fresh carbon tubular rims.

…but desperate times call for desperate measures, and all that good stuff. With a heart full passion, a boombox, and a wetsuit, our own Steven Hunter sets off to find a piece of the elusive Cross Crusade Grail.

It was really hard to choose, but this photo by Matthew Cardinal came out on top:
The second and third place photos were both taken by Oregon crosser Chris Brandt:
Incidentally, all top three photos were taken at the 2006 USGP in Hillsboro, Oregon. It was an epic day for all. A huge thanks to everyone who submitted photos, and to Star Crossed and CX Magazine. We’re going to run the contest again in October with some exciting sponsors and prizes, so stay tuned.
From the flyer:
Take your best shot at Star Crossed and submit it to our photo contest. Limit 2 best photos per person to starcrossedcxphoto@yahoo.com. Winner will be chosen by Star Crossed organizers and Raleigh employees by September 30th. To view entries go to flickr.com/photos/starcrossedcx.com
We’ll announce the winners of our own photo contest, sponsored by Star Crossed and CX Magazine, on Friday morning.
The beautiful photos keep rolling in. The September photo contest, sponsored by Star Crossed, has picked up a co sponsor: CX Magazine. CX Magazine is a brand new print magazine that celebrates ‘cross culture, bikes, and lifestyle. It’s set to hit stands in early October and the winner of the contest, in addition to getting a free entry to Star Crossed, will get their photo printed in CX Magazine and receive a free four issue mailing!
So far we’ve had 45 photos submitted. Here’s a sampling of the latest:
See all of this month’s submissions here. Remember, we’re looking for photos of riders in that special spot of pain. The winner will be announced on September 20th. Submit photos via email to paincave at race.cx
Here’s some of the latest submissions to the photo contest. We’re up to 26 photos from 10 different contributors! To the left is Ira Ryan. Frame builder, endurance racer, and A+ man. He also sponsors a cyclocross team, and builds a darn pretty cross bike. Ira went with me on my first ever Oregon MTB ride where we piled into a super sketchy van, drove to Scapoosse, and got covered in stinging nettle. High fives on gravel roads forever. Remember, the winner of the photo contest gets a free race entry to Starcrossed! See all the photos. Submit photos via email to paincave @ race.cx
Starcrossed has stepped up and offered up a free race entry or four free admissions to September’s Pain Cave photo winner. If you live in the Pacific Northwest and haven’t been to Starcrossed you are really missing out. I’ve participated as a racer, and as a spectator and it’s always worth the drive. Riding too fast over the sketchy euro pedestrian bridge makes you feel like you are right in Belgium.
Since Starcrossed is on the 22nd, the September winner will be chosen on September 20th.
Here’s some of today’s amazing photos. More will be posted this weekend.
The above submissions were from Chris Brandt, Mark Legg, Dan Coy, and Brooke Hoyer. More to come. Submit your photos via email to paincave @ race.cx
